Perma Atlas

Op tweede kerstdag 2024 had Coby Prins mij uitgenodigd voor lunch met een vriendin van haar bij de Chinees in de Willemsstraat. De vriendin was Latifa Oumlil. Wat bleek, ze woonde in de Egelantiersstraat, de straat waar ik de eerste 6 jaar van mijn verblijf in Amsterdam woonde.

Coby Prins invited me for lunch in the Chinese restaurant in the Willemsstraat on Boxers Day 2024. A friend of hers Latifa Oumlil would join us. It turned out Latifa Oumlil was living in the Egelantiersstraat, the street where my life in Amsterdam began. in 1980.

Latifa invited home me for tea. She lived in the last block of the Egelantiersstraat. The same as where I lived. In the eighties the block had been for the most part demolished and rebuilt. Egelantiersstraat 113 didn’t exsist anymore nor did the house number. Latifa lived across the nun’s convent that wasn’t torn down. Where she is living now stood the pension for migrant workers where her father had started his life in the Netherlands. Next door to a sauna for gay men that opened only at night. 

Latifa nodigde mij uit bij haar thee te komen drinken. Net als ik toen des tijds woonde zij in het laatste deel van de Egelantiersstraat. Dat deel was helemaal op de schop genomen in de tachtiger jaren. Egelantiersstraat 113 bestond niet meer, het nummer ook niet. Latifa woonde in de ‘nieuwbouw’ tegenover het nonnenklooster dat niet afgebroken was. Waar zij nu woont stond ooit een pension voor gastarbeiders waar haar vader zijn leven in Nederland begonnen was. Er naast was een Homosauna die alleen ‘snachts geopend was.

From her council flat in the Egelantiersstraat Latifa leads the Perma Atlas Foundation. The Foundation’s aim is ‘Recovery of the Atlas Mountains by Perma Culture’. The idea for the Foundation came to her after a particularly destructive flooding of the river Oulila that almost totally destroyed Anguelz her place of birth. Relief was quickly set up, but one question remained with Latifa: ‘What will happen after?’ She researched a solution to prevent flooding in the future.

Vanuit haar flat in de Egelantiersstraat bestiert Latifa Stichting Perma Atlas die tot doel heeft ‘Herstel van het Atlas Gebergte op basis van Perma Cultuur’. Het is ontstaan vanuit een hulp actie nadat haar geboorte dorp Anguelz in de Hoge Atlas in 2014 getroffen was door een plotselinge en heftige overstroming van de rivier Oulila. De hulp was snel geregeld, maar de vraag van Latifa was : ‘Wat gebeurt er daarna?’ Ze ging op zoek naar een oplossing die zulke overstromingen in de toekomst moest voorkomen.
