Tijdens mijn bezoeken aan Maureen en haar familie in Glascorn in de negentiger jaren, leerde ik al snel het Royal Canal bij Coolnahay kennen. Het kanaal was toen nog niet volledig opgeknapt. Het jaagpad was alleen hier en daar begaanbaar en zeker niet geplaveid.
In the Nineties visiting Maureen and family in Glascorn I first got to know the Royal Canal at Coolnahay. The canal was being done up. The towpath was mostly overgrown and certainly not paved.

Ik bleef terugkeren naar Coolnahay om het kanaal daar te tekenen. Het jaagpad van Dalton Bridge bij Coolnahay was toen al begaanbaar tot Mullingar / I kept coming back to Coolnahay to sketch the canal there. The towpath from Dalton Bridge at Coolnahay to Mullingar was already open

Toen Con Mönnich en ik besloten om van het Royal Canal een gemeenschappelijk project te maken, begonnen we in Coolnahay. Het besluit kwam voor de Covid epidemie maar werd pas daarna begonnen in 2022. In mei 2021 tijdens een verlichting van de Covid maatregelen ging ik met Maureen tochtjes maken rond Glascorn speciaal om te tekenen.
It was before the onslaught of the Covid epidemic when Con Mönnich and I decided to make a project of the Royal Canal. It was only in 2022 when the Covid restrictions were lifted that we made a start. However in May 2021 during a temporary break from the Covid safety measures Maureen and I made our first trip together around Glascorn with the aim to sketch.

In oostelijke richting gingen we tot de Hill of Down / Towards the east we went as far as the Hill of Down
In 2022 begonnen Con en ik eindelijk aan het door Covid uitgestelde project ‘Along the Royal Canal’. Con, zijn vrouw Akkie en ik logeerden in het ‘House Outside’ van Maureen in Glascorn. Vandaar gingen we met en zonder Maureen als gids het kanaal in oostelijke en westelijke richting verkennen.
Finally in 2022 Con and I started with our project ‘Along the Royal Canal’ after a long delay due to Covid. Con, his wife Akkie and I stayed in Maureen’s ‘House Outside’ in Glascorn. From there we went discovering the canal towards the east and towards the west.

In mei 2023 waren Akkie, Con en ik terug in Mullingar. Op weg naar Mullingar begonnen we te inventariseren wat we al ‘hadden’ van het Royal Canal. Daarna probeerden we zo ver mogelijk naar het oosten te gaan, maar we kwamen tot de ontdekking dat verder dan Kilkock we op één dag niet konden gaan. Op weg terug naar Achill stopten we ook nog aan de Longford Spur van het kanaal.
In May of 2023 Akkie, Con and I were back in Mullingar. On the way to Mullingar we tried to figure out what we ‘had’ of the Royal Canal and what not. We tried to go east as far as possible in one day, but could only get as far as Kilcock. On the way back we ‘did’ the Longford Spur of the canal.

Toen probeerden we Dublin met de trein in één dag op en neer ’te doen’. We kwamen niet verder dan het eerste stukje vanaf de Liffey. Maar het opende wel onze ogen hoeveel moois het Royal Canal in Dublin alleen al te bieden had.
Then we tried Dublin in a one day return. We did only get a few hundred meters from the Liffey. But it made us realise how much Royal Canal Dublin had to offer.

Omdat ik vond dat het tekenen van het Royal Canal te langzaam ging in vergelijk met het fotograferen van Con, besloot ik in oktober van 2023 alleen terug te gaan naar Mullingar. Ik experimenteerde ook met een andere techniek. Die techniek was echter erg bewerkelijk.
Sketching the Royal Canal went much slower than Con’s photography. Ik decided to go back on my own to Mullingar in October 2023. I also started to experiment with another way of sketching. However that took even more time.
