Begin tachtiger jaren toen ik in Amsterdam was neergestreken, groeide langzaam maar zeker het idee dat ik een stripverhaal over Iran wilde maken. Een soort caleidoscoop van beelden, herinneringen, ervaringen van hoe het was toen ik daar woonde en ideeën en fantasieën over hoe het daar na de machtsovername van Khomeini zou zijn. Ik had namelijk het vermoeden dat het nieuwe regiem hetzelfde was als het oude, behalve dan dat het onderdrukkingsmechanisme nu in een religieus sausje gedompeld was. Voor zo’n ratjetoe aan uitgangspunten is de meest geschikte vorm toch de detective. Daarin kan werkelijk alles de revue passeren zonder dat het in fragmenten uiteen valt.
In the early eighties when I had settled in Amsterdam it dawned on me that I wanted to make a graphic novel about Iran. It would be a caleidoscope of images, memories and experiences of ho wit was when i lived there but also ideas and fantasies about how the country became after the advent to power of the Ayatollah Khomeiny. I had the feeling that the new powers that be not much different were from whom they replaced in matters of oppression albeit dipped in a religious sauce. For such a mix match of basic starting points is the best form to put it in the crime novel.
In 1981 werd de jongste zoon van onze Iraanse vrienden Mehdi Alavi opgepakt en direct erna zonder proces geëxecuteerd in het voormalige Ahwaz Hotel. Het schokte mij omdat hij nadat hij tijdens de Sjah in de gevangenis had gezeten, hoopte dat de revolutie betere tijden zou brengen. Hij werd 22 jaar. Na het bericht van zijn dood ging ik aan de slag met het stripboek dat uiteindelijk ‘Moord in Iran’ zou gaan heten en het eerste deel in 1985 zou uitkomen.
In 1981 Mehdi Alavi the youngest son of our Iranian friends was taken and immediatly without due porocess executed in the former Hotel Ahwaz. It shocked me. He had been in prison during the Shah too. After the revolution he had hoped that better times would come. He was 22 years old. Right away after the news of his death I started work on the graphic novel that would become ‘Moord in Iran’. Its first part would be published in 1985.

Verzekeringsfraude detective Rika Vlaskop wordt naar Iran gestuurd om de reden achter de dood van de populaire zangeres Simin Naderizadeh te onderzoeken, voor zover dat mogelijk is vijf jaar en een revolutie later. De popster is al voor de revolutie omgekomen, maar haar songs zijn nog altijd populair. Vooral onder Iraniers die naar het buitenland zijn gevlucht. In het nieuwe Iran van de Ayatollahs is popmuziek inmiddels streng verboden. Maar ook in de tijd van de Shah blijkt Simin niet goed te hebben gelegen. Rika wordt gastvrij opgenomen in de familie van de weduwnaar en ex-manager van de popzangeres Het blijkt al snel dat Simin een dwarsligger van de eerste orde was die zich aan god noch gebod hield. Daar had ze een prangende reden voor. Rika intussen rolt van de ene gevaarlijke situatie in de andere en raakt al snel iedere controle over haar leven kwijt. Vrienden en familieleden van de zangeres spinnen een cocon van verhalen om haar heen. Maar wat is de waarheid en is die nog wel te vinden in het Iran van Ayatollah Khomeiny? Of moet Rika het zoeken in de Iraanse gemeenschap in Europa?
A short description of ‘Moord in Iran’
Insurance fraud PI Rika Vlaskop is sent to Iran to uncover the truth about the death of pop singer Simin Naderizadeh. Simin had died before the revolution, but her songs are still very popular especially among Iranians who had fled the country. In the new Iran of the Ayatollahs is pop music outlawed. But even during the reign of the Shah Simin wasn’t well received in some circles either. Although it is five years since and a revolution later her boss thinks Rika can find out what happened. In Iran Rika is hospitably received by the family of the widower and ex-manager of the late pop star. It turns out that Simin was an awkward girl who embarrassed everybody around her. She had a good reason for her behaviour too. Rika in the meantime gets into all kinds of trouble and quickly looses the control over her own life. Do friends and family of the singer spin a cocoon of stories around Rika to hide a dangerous truth? But what is the truth ? Is it to be found in the Islamic Republic or has Rika to look for it in the Iranian refugee community in Europe?
